My daughter wrote this recently to describe what is it like for her having eczema.
I have had eczema as long as I can remember. My mum says I have had eczema since I was a baby. I live near Wicklewood and I am seven years old. I have suffered from eczema itch for about six years.
I like dancing to the music, when I have got time, writing stories and drawing.
Mummy says I have normal eczema, but I have very dry skin when I itch it. Creams with paraffin in makes my eczema worse. I used to put on Doublebase, Hydramol and steroid ointments. They all have paraffin in. Morning and night I used to put on all these creams. I got cold in the winter. When my eczema is bad it feels sore. I sometimes scratch until my eczema bleeds badly. Then it feels really sore.
My eczema sometimes affects my life. When my rabbits come in to the house to have a run, my eczema goes nuts! I thought having eczema was horrid, but I have more time with mummy and daddy. Now I like having eczema because my friends’ mums and dads care about me too.
I do have another allergy, but I don’t think it has anything to do with eczema. I am allergic to dust (hay, animal fur). I went to Melsop Farm and sat on some hay. I held a guinea pig but it went down the back of the hay! The staff broke all the hay up and all the dust came all around me. All under my chin was red and lumpy and itchy. Daddy said we had to go home straight away. I didn’t want to, but I had to. When I got home I had a shower. After that my face calmed down. I watched TV to try and forget about my rash.
The creams that have worked for me are (not with paraffin in): Johnson’s Baby Nourishing lotion, Johnson’s baby intense moisture cream, and Arbonne Baby Care (ABC) body lotion.
I rely on mummy and daddy for help, e.g. telling me not to itch when I don’t notice I’m itching. I also rely on my nanas, granddads, aunties and uncles.
When I used to go to swimming lessons, before and after, me and mummy put hydramol on me. My swimming teacher thought I was really greasy! Once, when I was asleep in bed, I scratched and scratched until my right knee didn’t stop bleeding. When I woke up I thought that I was going to get a really bad telling off. But thankfully I didn’t.
My dream is when I get older that I will not have eczema again. It will be outstanding if I lose my eczema now. My eczema is really good now. It does not itch at all. My eczema places are: elbow, wrists, under my knees, ankles, neck and I used to have eczema in my head and on my face. I will be delighted when my eczema goes, then I will be the same as my friends!
